Curriculum integration ideas for 5th grade

Feelings, emotions, expressions:  There are a variety of emotions expressed throughout the book.  Have students identify the different expressions and related emotions, and how these are tied to the different colors.   Have students list the colors from the book and make a list of free associations about each color.  These associations could include emotions, memories, objects, etc.  Students may partner up and discuss the similarities and differences in their associations.  After sharing, have students pick one color and write a paragraph about what that color means to them.

Reading/Retelling: Have students retell the different colors in the book.  Do they feel the same way about blue?  How about red?  What colors are missing from the book?  What emotions do they associate with those colors?

Reading/Drama:  Go to the Collaborative Performance page on the wiki.  Click on the links and print "The Red Summer," "Honey," and "The Magic Wand."  Put students in groups and have them read the stories Readers' Theatre style.  Have each group create a fiction mountain for their story.  Students also could discuss/write about the writer's association with the color or complete a CROPQV for the story.

Writing: Have students write about their favorite color.  How does it make them feel?  How does a certain color make them feel?  How do they feel a certain day?

Music and Writing: Follow the link below to view a lesson plan from the Kennedy Center on jazz/blues music history, jazz dance, and poetry.  See Ms. Shumake for music and dance suggestions.
